Sometimes, there comes a point where all writers find that their writing slows to a grinding halt. While this can cause panic, other times it is a chance for rest and renewal.
I hit that wall recently, and instead of stressing out about it, I chose to embrace it. I took extra time to play with my kids, visit family, and even relax by (gasp) watching television.
Instead of my writing shriveling up to nothing, it has actually benefitted from the time I spent in rejuvenation. My words are more clear, both in my mind and on the page. I have gained a whole new perspective on what I am doing as a freelance writer, and how to make the most of the time I have.
Overall, it was a good experience, not one to shy away from. Next time you think you have writer’s block, consider if it isn’t time to renew your creative resources. It’s better than hitting your head against the brick wall, that’s for sure.
These periods can hit all at once, or they can gradually creep up on you, one day at a time. Sometimes you don’t even realize it at first, like I did. Days slip by, and the writing starts to fade. The muse has taken a vacation, why shouldn’t you?
