The recession in the U.S. has everyone a little shook up. Especially now that it is “official,” every other blog post, news article, and video I’ve seen has handy tips and tricks to “recession proof” your career.
Well, I’m here to tell you that, as a freelance writer, you don’t need to recession proof anything.
Why wouldn’t you want to recession proof your career? Better safe than sorry, right? Here are my reasons:
- If you are a freelancer, entrepreneur, or run your own home based business, you have nothing to fear. You cannot get fired or laid off. In fact, your skills are in high demand now, as businesses are outsourcing their needs to people like you.
- Don’t sink a sailing ship. You have survived this long doing what you do best. You have honed your business practices to what suits you and your clients the best. If you scramble to change because of a recession, you could throw off the balance that has served you so well.
- You are already awesome. You have taken the plunge, proven your skills, and earned some clients because of it. You know what you want and you know how to get it. A recession cannot destroy people who are actively pursuing their dreams.
One nagging question I hear you asking is “What about money?” Well, either you’ve been able to save some money over the past few years of inflation, or you haven’t. Either way, you have the skills to succeed.
Yes, there may be lean months ahead, but in the freelance writing world, that is to be expected. “Feast or famine,” as the saying goes. A freelance writer has the proper mindset to deal with trying times. Work hard, stay the course, and things will work out for the best.
Yet, I believe that the recession will be a boost to many of your freelance writing careers, not a hinderance. Prove me right. Go out there and shake your fist at this recession.
Oh, and take a deep breath. Don’t let the recession get on your nerves.
