Support Your Local Writer

The writing life is lonely. We spend long hours behind the computer screen, with only the click of the keyboard to keep us company. We don’t get to see the results of our work very often. The only reward that we (sometimes) receive is a check.

It’s also difficult for many of us to ask for recommendations. It feels too much like begging for compliments. After all, we’re already gifted wordsmiths with the muse on our shoulder. Why would we need another ego boost?

It is sad to say that many excellent writers give up, because they have no outside motivation. There is no cheering squad on the sidelines, pushing them on. Many write through adversity, and through quizzical stares. Friends and family look on, shaking their heads. “A writer? Is she for real? When’s she going to get a real job?”

So in honor of the holiday season, I’m giving a personal shoutout to a few of the best blog posts I’ve read lately. (I just culled through my bookmarks, and I have quite a few to share.)

I’m also issuing a challenge to each of my readers. For every good writer you know out there, take a moment out of your day to give them a pat on the back. Let them know that you appreciate their words, and that all their hard work has not been in vain.

Who knows? Your encouragement could push them on to greatness.

Here’s my current list. It changes all the time, as I find new blogs daily. So if you aren’t on here, stop by and let me know. I’ll be happy to check out your writing, and let you know what I think.

In no particular order…

I want to send a personal thank you to each of these authors. Your words have touched me. They have made a difference in my life. I am not the same person I was before I read these words.

Readers, in the spirit of the holidays, won’t you stop by your favorite blogs, and let your authors know how much you appreciate them?

Thank you for your kind words, to all of them. It makes a difference to the writing community at large to hear them.

You are right. Writers are like Pavlovian dogs- one treat keeps ‘em at the keyboard for another week.

I’m an old Doc who plays in a bluegrass band. I write fiction, but some of it is real. Drop by. If nothing else, it is different.

Sometimes the treats are all we have! ;)

I did stop by your blog, and I love your voice. Excellent writing, and you’re a great storyteller.

And you’re right, it is different. Which is good, because nobody wants to read the same old thing.

Thanks for stopping by! Come back anytime.

    Kimberlee,

Thank you so much for letting us know your appreciation. It’s so important to hear that one’s words have honestly impacted someone :) .

Your reminder to voice our appreciation is wonderful.

    Hi Zoe!

It’s true, especially the particular post I linked to really hit home for me. Everyone says time is money, yet it is far more valuable. :)

Thanks for stopping by! I hope everyone remembers that a thank you is free and easy to give.

You know, the thing that really works for me is the article you linked to that emphasizes “how to separate work from home” when you work from home.

I have been working from home for 3 years now and it still remains a challenge.

  6. kferrell Says:

Hi Derek, glad to see you here!

It is a big challenge to keep it all separate. On top of the normal challenges, I have two children under 4, who make it difficult to stick to a schedule.

I’m glad you enjoyed my post! I hope to see you again.

Hi Kim: The Lateral Action blog has some awesome resources, thank you for pointing it out. And thanks for the mention and for the link :-)

Thanks, Kimberlee, for the post and for including me in such fine company. I’m looking forward to exploring the other writers you’ve highlighted here.

One of the things I’ve discovered recently is how important it is, as a solitary writer, to push myself out into the world. Not only the world of other solitary writers, and not only the world of those who I know will appreciate my work. But out into the greater world where new readers, new fans and unexpected miracles occur. That’s something I plan to write about soon on my blog for writers, The Voice of Your Muse (http://thevoiceofyourmuse.com).

    Again, thanks.

Hi Marelisa! I found that article awhile back and cannot get enough of it! When I need some new organizational tools, or I’m just bored, I pick out a few to try. And you’re quite welcome! Your blog is so inspiring, every post is a delight!

Hi Mark David! Your books are definitely on my list to Santa this year. Your voice is outstanding and shines through every piece of your writing. I do love meeting new people, whether they’re writers or other fun loving folks!

Thank you both for stopping by! Hope to see you again soon.
